Training
Training that survives Monday morning
Most technical training teaches a product. Ours teaches a job: what your engineers will have to do with that product next week, in your environment. Courses are written and delivered by engineers who do the work.
Skydome Learning
Our training practice has its own name and its own site. Skydome Learning writes and teaches custom courses in voice, networking and security, for one organization at a time, with a hands-on lab for every topic.
The site explains how a custom course is built, the subject areas, the formats, and how lab access works.
You might be here because
- A new platform is arriving and your team has only seen the vendor overview.
- A migration is planned and your engineers need to understand both the old system and the new one.
- New staff need the fundamentals before they can be useful on call.
- Your team passed the certification and still hesitates in front of a real outage.
What the work includes
- Built for operations
- Each course is organized around tasks: add a site, trace a failed call, change a routing rule, recover from a failure. Theory is included where a task needs it.
- Hands-on labs
- Every topic has a lab that engineers complete themselves. Watching an instructor type is not practice.
- Tailored to your environment
- We adapt the material to the platforms, versions and migration path your organization is using, and where possible to your own design.
- Materials your team keeps
- Slides, a lab manual, and the runbooks your engineers write during the labs.
- On site or remote
- For one team or several, as a single session or spread across the weeks of a project.
Example scenario: a county government
A new platform, a team of two, and a go-live date
The county was replacing its phone system. The integrator would leave after go-live, and the two engineers who would own the system had been to a vendor overview and nothing else. They were also the same two engineers keeping the old system alive.
Read what we didWhat you get
- A course outline agreed before delivery
- Slides and a lab manual for every attendee
- A lab environment for the duration of the course
- Runbooks written by your own engineers during the labs
Subjects
Subjects include telephony fundamentals, from the PBX to cloud calling; migrating from Cisco Unified Communications Manager to a cloud calling platform; and reading SIP traces to troubleshoot calls. Ask about other subjects in voice, networking and security.
Questions we are asked
How long is a course?
From a half day to a week, depending on the subject and the starting point of the team. Shorter sessions spread over several weeks work well alongside a project.
Can you build a course for our own environment?
Yes, and it is the most effective kind. We use your design, your naming and your migration plan as the worked example.
Is the training tied to a certification?
No. The aim is that engineers can do the work. It complements certification study and does not replace it.
How many people can attend?
Small groups work best for lab-based courses, so that every attendee completes every lab. We agree the group size with you when we plan the course.
